After each race, a ballast distribution is established based on the positions in which drivers finish. This is done to enhance the fairness and competitiveness of each driver, even those with cars from 2006 or even 2005.
But in Spain, during the last race and the highly publicized withdrawal of all Audi drivers after two collisions, it was Mercedes and its 6 cars that should have undergone the entire ballast redistribution just one race away from a very tight championship!
Mercedes complained to the DTM officials and finally reached an agreement on the weight distribution. Indeed, the position of the cars on lap 46 of the Barcelona Race 2 will be considered rather than their finishing position, since if that had been the case, the 6 Mercedes, being the only ones to finish, would have taken all the ballast. Audi withdrew its drivers 3 laps later.
Here is the weight of the different versions of the two German brands after redistribution:
Mercedes-Benz 2007 – 1075 kg
Audi 2007 – 1065 kg
Mercedes-Benz 2006 – 1060 kg
Audi 2006 – 1055 kg
Mercedes-Benz 2005 – 1055 kg
Audi 2005 – 1030 kg
Final stage in Hockenheim on October 14, where Audi and Mercedes will compete for the title while the championship is currently very tight.
