Starting from the 2008 Monte Carlo Automobile Rally, Pirelli will equip all four-wheel drive cars competing in the FIA World Rally Championship. The asphalt tire has just been approved by the Federation.

Following the latest tests conducted by Paolo Andreucci at the wheel of a Peugeot 307WRC from the French team Bozian Racing, Pirelli received the green light from the International Automobile Federation to produce its new tires.

According to Pirelli, these new generation tires do not use heavy hydrocarbons to comply with the legislation that will be in effect starting in 2010. The design of the new tire has nothing in common with current rubber.

The construction has been reinforced compared to current tires to minimize the risk of punctures. This was one of Pirelli’s challenges, as they have to do without an anti-puncture system.

Two types of tires will be offered: a ‘soft’ tire for wet or dry roads with low temperatures and a ‘hard’ tire for abrasive asphalt and high temperatures.

Work continues on off-road and snow tires.

According to the WRC.
