Chevrolet committed to the touring championship in 2005. The originally American manufacturer, which was then acquired by a Korean brand, had initially planned to remain in the WTCC for only three years.
But with the good performances of the RML team in the championship with the Chevrolet Lacetti and notably Alain Menu, it prompted the brand to continue the operation somewhat (in) marketing (terms).
The Director of Motorsports – Eric Neve commented: « The extension of the contract with the WTCC should be seen as a commitment by Chevrolet in Europe, but it is mainly thanks to the tremendous work done by RML in competition. »
« The team has worked very hard over the past three seasons, making significant progress each time, and will continue to do so in preparation for the 2008 season this winter! »
The team had scored only a few points in 2005. Last year, the Lacetti came back with 2 victories, and this 2007 season with two races to go, the RML team already has 5 victories.
Ray Mallock for RML added: « It is an important reward to see that our performances have convinced Chevrolet Europe to stay and extend for 2008. It is encouraging. »
Chevrolet is currently third in the championship, only 23 points behind Seat.
