This afternoon, there was a demonstration by the Seat Leon Tdi. The three drivers equipped with this model indeed recorded the three best times in the Monza qualifications, for the penultimate round of the 2007 season. Yvan Muller dominated ahead of Jordi Gené and Gabriel Tarquini. [Result]
Muller achieved 1:59.487 in the second part of the session to give the SEAT diesel its first pole position. This is also Muller’s first pole in WTCC. Jordi Gene (1:59.887) and Gabriele Tarquini (2:00.004) are 2nd and 3rd, also driving a SEAT diesel.
Yvan Muller: “I am really satisfied because I missed it several times by very little. This is something new I can take off the list. It’s the conclusion of some great team work. Securing the top three places is a reward for the risk taken to adopt diesel. Tomorrow will be a crucial day for the championship.”
Gabriele Tarquini: “The potential of diesel is immense. It allows us to accelerate well out of corners. The goal was to put Yvan on pole, and we succeeded.”
Two CHEVROLET cars follow. The drivers have decided to race together to benefit from the slipstream. Well played as they secure 4th and 5th places with Larini (2:00.322) and Alain Menu (2:00.358). Huff is only 16th.
The BMWs are a bit further back. Augusto Farfus and Felix Porteiro achieved the 6th and 7th fastest times. Porteiro took a brief trip into the gravel early in the session but returned to the pits to resolve the issue.
The top 8 is completed by James Thompson in his ALFA ROMEO. The Briton achieved a solid 2:00.497.
Andy Priaulx, 13th, plays the shot and commented: “We had a good first run that allowed us to be in the top 8. We then tried to optimize performance in the 2nd and 3rd runs but traffic prevented us.”
