There are weekends like that where things don’t work out even if there’s unwavering determination. That’s the case for BMW, which needs to forget the Asian tour and focus on the final race of the 2007 season. It’s true that these results have little impact on the two championships because the fate of the German team was decided much earlier in the season.
For the Chinese GP, it was not very bright since Kubica, while leading the race and having the resources to win it, retired due to his gearbox. As for Heidfeld, he still finished in the points by securing 7th place.
Nick Heidfeld – 7th
“I am very disappointed because fourth place was possible today. It was a mistake to take a second set of wet tires after only 28 laps. My first set was completely destroyed and I lost about 12 seconds per lap. But after 32 laps, I had to switch back to dry tires.”
“The race started well, I managed to gain two positions at the beginning. On lap four, I made a mistake while braking before the hairpin and Vitantonio Liuzzi passed me. Later in the race, we met again, but I couldn’t catch up to him. I was well-positioned in the corners but couldn’t catch up on the straights.”
Robert Kubica – retirement
“I withdrew from the race because of a hydraulic leak. This problem before the withdrawal had a significant impact on steering and my speed. It seemed very good until this problem.”
“We stayed on the track when it started to rain with dry tires for three or four laps, which was very difficult, but it paid off afterwards. However, in the end, it didn’t pay off because I couldn’t finish the race!”
Mario Theissen – director of BMW Motorsport
« It was an extremely tough weekend for our team. On Friday and Saturday, we had hydraulic issues three times, and unlike the European races, here we don’t have the opportunity to analyze such a problem and take appropriate measures. Consequently, we could have had a problem. »
« The only positive point, apart from Heidfeld’s smooth race, is that we still don’t know the world champion. »
Willy Rampf – Technical Director
It was a turbulent race in harsh atmospheric conditions. Both cars had rain settings, but the pit stops did not synchronize as they should have. As for Robert, he was leading when he was forced to retire. It was hard to swallow, but we will do our best to improve in Brazil.
