Nicky Fry, the head of the Honda team, stated this morning that he knows a stronger Jenson Button than ever. According to the Briton, the number one driver of his team is having the best season of his F1 career, and that’s due to – or thanks to – Honda’s poor performances.
« I think Jenson’s performance in China confirms a lot of things. Firstly, it shows how good a driver he is, » commented Fry.
Paradoxically, in my opinion, it’s still his best season. He made the best out of the situations, acted impeccably, and I think he especially impressed a lot of people in the paddocks despite a car that wasn’t up to the mark, continued the English boss.
« His result [in China] was not necessarily unexpected. We thought indeed that if the weather conditions were wet, they could benefit Button and bring in points. »
Although Honda only scored 4 points in China, Fry believes that it is probably the best result the Japanese team could have hoped for.
« This means a lot for our team and our drivers. Indeed, if you try to run a Mile in 7 minutes, you won’t try the next day to do it in 4 minutes, but instead in a minute less. Then minute by minute. » He metaphorizes. « It’s the same for us; We should not yet hope to win a GP. »
This season, Honda is very disappointing, and with all the teams having scored at least one point this season, it is very important to show that Honda is not falling behind.
« Our work involves progressing little by little, with realistic goals. »
« There is therefore a certain amount of rebalancing to be done in the team, but when you earn points in such situations, it’s important to celebrate them. Being 10th in qualifying was good, but finishing 5th is a good reward. So we must celebrate it! » Concluded Fry.
