On this first day at Interlagos, Toro Rosso confirms its potential in wet conditions. The small Scuderia seems to enjoy these kinds of conditions that not all teams handle well.
That’s why the drivers, Vettel and Liuzzi, were more successful in the morning than in the afternoon. And for good reason, the former set the 7th fastest time, while the Italian was a bit further back, finishing in 10th place.
As track conditions significantly improved after the midday break, the drivers completed this first day of testing in positions that ultimately resemble more what Toro Rosso has accustomed us to this season.
Sebastian Vettel – 7th and 17th
« This is one of the best moments of the year, and the pleasure of driving is enormous. The new surface seems quite grippy, which can also be seen when comparing it to last year’s. The new surface has eased the bumps. But towards the end of the session, as the situation was drier, you could see the cars’ trajectory. »
« In view of our performance, the wet conditions this morning made for a rather difficult start to the day. But, even though we didn’t have enough time in the dry areas today, we tried to gather data on both tire specifications. We need to see how the situation evolves tomorrow. »
Vitantonio Liuzzi – 10th and 15th
« It’s not one of my favorite circuits, but the adjustments made over the past year have allowed for slightly more assured driving. With all the changes in slope and the turns that are taken at both high and low speeds, it was important to change this bumpy surface. »
Overall, it’s a good track with a great history, which makes it special. As for my day, there were some issues in finding the right balance with the car. This was due to the changing conditions, starting off wet and then gradually drying.
Overall, we still have a bit of work to do on the setup, but we’ve gathered some useful information to work on it. I think in terms of tires, it will be difficult to find the right strategy. Let’s hope the weather will make up its mind: either completely dry or completely wet, that would be helpful for everyone!
