We informed you on Thursday that the GP2 director, Bruno Michel, had proposed to the 13 teams currently participating to stay in the championship for the second generation of GP2 during the 2008-2010 seasons.
The teams already present were, of course, favored by the management, and despite the 30 applications sent by other teams, notably from F3, none were accepted.
« I think the 13 teams present have done a very good job for the past three years » admitted Michel. « And if you look at this season for example, more than ten different teams have won a victory. »
« I therefore think that I must remain loyal to its teams, who have believed in the series from the beginning.
Michel then added the reason why he wanted to keep the struggling teams this season: « The teams that were a bit behind this season have committed to addressing their weaknesses. I think this will make the 2008 championship even more exciting. »
The championship is not impermeable to other teams wanting to associate with GP2, but the third generation planned after 2010 should allow them a presence.
« Our renewal invitations will be issued again at the end of 2010, » he commented. « We have simply decided to keep the current presentation regarding the teams for the second generation, but that does not mean it will be the same for the third… »
« Finally, for the teams we have chosen, I wish them the greatest success, but I also want to thank the other teams that were not selected and I want to tell them that ‘their time will come.’ » concluded Michel.
