Nelson Piquet Jr, currently a test driver at Renault, stated in a Brazilian newspaper this morning that he has a good chance of driving a Formula 1 car as a main driver next season.
The young driver, only 22 years old, has been contacted by several teams for the next season, but like many drivers, the Brazilian is a victim of what could be called the Alonso syndrome—meaning that as long as Fernando Alonso has not decided or confirmed his position for 2008, Piquet cannot sign anything.
He remains optimistic nonetheless: « Someone will give me the chance to prove that I have all the skills to be a good Formula 1 driver. »
The boss of the French team, Flavio Briatore, is also waiting for Alonso’s response and commented at a press conference this morning that the team will not be able to announce anything in the coming days, nor even in the coming weeks, or even the coming months.
« I only ask to have my chance » claims the Brazilian. « And if Alonso does not manage to go to Renault, there will always be someone else who will want him. »
