The Spyker F1 team will be renamed Force India in 2008. The new owners of the team announced this information on Saturday, confirming India’s emergence as an economic and sporting force in the world of F1, the premier discipline of motorsports.
Spyker F1 was acquired at the beginning of this month by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya and Dutch businessman Michiel Mol.
The owners said that Bernie Ecclestone, head of F1, has approved the team’s new name. All other teams are expected to approve this change as well.
The new name will also be submitted for approval to the international motor sports council on Wednesday.
« I asked the FIA to change the team’s name to give a special connotation regarding India F1. It is now up to the FIA to decide on this proposal, » stated Mallya.
Mallya went on to say that the team had already developed a logo in the colors of the Indian national flag.
« The aesthetics of the cars will obviously be determined by designers, we will have, because one of the designers wants the car colors to reflect the image of India to perfectly match the brand and the new logo. »
The logo of Force India will have a very important connection with the Indian flag, and this is actually the main feature of this new logo, concluded the businessman.
