The red lights go out, the race begins, and from the first corner, you can feel the tension in each driver’s mind. The stakes for this Grand Prix are immense, and getting a good start is crucial. Räikkönen is in 3rd but takes off perfectly, overtaking Hamilton, who gets hindered by the Finn in the following corner and is also passed by Alonso. The Englishman falls to 4th, a position that still secures him the title at this point in the race.
In the same corner, it’s Liuzzi who hits the rear wing of Kovalainen, the first setback for Renault because a few laps later, Fisichella makes an error, cuts straight across the grass, and while re-entering the track, is violently hit by Yamamoto, who climbs onto the R27. Both cars retire, and despite the huge amount of debris on the track, the safety car does not come out.
Kovalainen can rejoin a lap behind the leaders, but it’s not over for the Finn who makes a mistake halfway through the race and crashes into the tire walls. He is unharmed, but the race is very bad for Renault. No points scored, but more importantly, no car finished the race.
Hamilton is under pressure from the lighter BMWs and gives way. He is overtaken by Kubica and, after making several mistakes on the curbs, he finds himself slowing down. Sudden twist! His car has gone into self-control mode as a safety measure. All the indicators are slow, and it takes a few precious seconds to put everything back in order. The Englishman loses more than 10 places in the process and will only restart in 18th position…
Alonso is then virtually world champion, but not for long as Kubica, who is light on fuel, takes advantage of the slipstream and manages to overtake him. Räikkönen is still second, but would be virtually world champion.
On his side, Hamilton continues his climb, he is much faster than his competitors but when reaching Button he starts to stagnate. Button holds his own against the McLaren, but only temporarily. The Honda driver will have to retire a few laps later and leaves Hamilton in 11th position. He still has to make up 29 seconds to get to 6th place, which would allow him to win the title.
Mark Webber, who was 4th, had the opportunity to gain a position for his team to be better than Williams in the championship but will also have to retire.
All the drivers have refueled at least once, but the strategies are still unclear. The Ferraris were lighter on fuel but seem very fast.
Hamilton is still very fast, setting the fastest lap of the race at 1:12.506, but has to deal with many cars that hinder him. The McLaren team decides to go all out and chooses to bring the young prodigy in for three pit stops.
The strategy does not seem to be paying off, and Räikkönen even manages to overtake Felipe Massa after their second pit stop. Räikkönen thus speeds towards victory and, more importantly, gains a bit more of an edge towards the title!
Alonso can still win if he is second, Hamilton must move up to 6th place, but the McLarens are not in a position to come back.
Incredible scenario for this last Grand Prix of the season, which for three years has been offering us a fantastic show. The titles have been decided each time at Interlagos…
