Kimi Räikkönen accomplished what was thought to be impossible just hours before the Brazilian Grand Prix. Winning and becoming a world champion for the first time in his career!
From the start of the race, the championship kept changing hands mathematically, but the Finn eventually emerged victorious after the 71 laps of the race. Kimi was lucky as Hamilton suffered an electronic issue that caused him to lose places, costing him the driver’s championship.
Felipe Massa at his national Grand Prix finishes second, so the Scuderia ends the season with a one-two and a driver and constructor championship title.
Kimi Räikkönen – 1st
It is very difficult for me to express what I am feeling right now: it’s an enormous emotion. I really want to thank the team for everything they have accomplished this year. Thanks also to my parents, my wife Jenni, and everyone who believed in me. I have achieved what I wanted to for a long time. Today, Felipe Massa’s help was crucial. We had to be first and second and see where the others were. Unexpected and unforeseen things happened during this race. I am very proud to have won the title with Ferrari, in this team I have found a great family and I thank them all.
Felipa Massa – 2nd
«Today is a great day for the team and for Kimi who won his first title. Of course, I would have preferred to win my home race in Brazil, however, I am very proud to have helped Räikkönen who was the only one of us two still able to win the title. I am proud to race with Ferrari who have always believed in me even when I was not yet an F1 driver. After everything that has happened this season, whether on or off the track, it is extraordinary to be able to celebrate together Kimi’s driver title and the team’s constructor title.»
Jean Todt – Director
The dream of winning the driver championship title has become a reality, even though it seemed almost impossible just a few hours ago. For this, we needed a helping hand from others, both from the competitors in the driver championship and other cars that got in the way. We not only won the driver title with Kimi, but also numerically confirmed the constructor title acquired on September 13th after the World Council’s decision against McLaren. Two titles, nine victories, nine pole positions… These numbers are exceptional for such a challenging season. Today we have been rewarded for all this work. I would like to thank Kimi and Felipe, who demonstrated his loyalty to Ferrari. Without his help, we would not have achieved this result.
Luca Baldisseri – Race Director
«We needed a perfect race and that’s what happened. However, the involuntary help from the drivers between Hamilton and Räikkönen was very important for us. Both of our drivers were fantastic and the car lived up to their level. This result confirms that Ferrari is a fantastic team.»
