McLaren announced this morning the extension of its test driver Pedro De la Rosa’s contract for 2008 and at least until 2009.
The Spaniard, who has been a test driver with the team for over two years now, has shown great commitment to his team, but many rumors suggested he would move to Prodrive in 2008, the future 12th team in the championship. The rumors have thus been contradicted once again.
« I still have two years left on my contract and I am very happy at the moment with the team », commented De La Rosa to the Spanish newspaper ‘Marca’ before leaving Interlagos.
He also stated that Prodrive was an option, but nothing more.
« It’s logical since they could have been equipped by McLaren in 2008 and it would have been perfect for them to have a driver who knows the single-seater very well. »
« My chances with them have decreased for some time and I doubt it would have happened. » Admitted the 36-year-old pilot.
« What is clear to me is that in 2008 and 2009, I will be on a McLaren. Here, I am happy and respected. »
« Furthermore, my relationship with the team is still excellent, » concluded the teammate of Gary Paffett, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton.
Prodrive is still uncertain about its future in F1, and it is highly likely that this information influenced the Iberian’s decision.
