Spyker will therefore become Force India in 2008 after its official request for a name change was accepted Wednesday by the FIA council.
The team, which will change its name for the third time in four years this 2008 season, has been bought by Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya, who plans to use the team as a vehicle for his own country, India, in terms of talent and finances.
« We have tasked the FIA to examine a name change for the Spyker company to become the Force India team. I believe all the conditions are met today for this team to be called as such, » Mallya told Reuters during the Brazilian Grand Prix last weekend.
Mallya, who, together with Spyker F1 director Michel Mol, led a consortium to acquire the team last month, indicated that the team and the brand’s logo are likely to incorporate India’s national colors. However, no official announcement regarding Indian drivers has been made yet.
Having already expressed his desire to bring back the promising Adrian Sutil, Mallya stated that he would like to see a more experienced driver in the second car.
Ralf Schumacher has been mentioned for this position, as has Jarno Trulli, who is also expected to leave the Japanese manufacturer.
“We need a driver of a certain caliber who can help the team in its quest for performance,” said Mallya.
