The promoters of the Rally Australia have justified the reasons for their cancellation from the 2008 calendar.

Indeed, the rally was supposed to take place in early September 2008 in Australia, but the event organizers felt that too much delay had occurred and that it would not be ready in time. Therefore, the rally will only apply starting in 2009.

The FIA, having been informed late, was unable to replace one of the major events of the season, hence the 15 rallies planned in 2008 instead of 16 this year.

A statement from CAMS – Confederation of Australian Motor Sport – which oversees the event, indicated: « CAMS believes that applying for the World Rally Championship only in 2009 is in the best interest of the sport and the country. To represent our country to the world, the best events and organizations are needed, which will be the case in 2009, not before. »

Colin Osborne, the president of CAMS added: « CAMS will obviously continue to work with all parties to maintain its place on the WRC calendar and to support the world of motorsport globally. »

The last Australian event took place in October 2006 already, and no event was scheduled for this 2007 season.
