The brilliant Russian Vitaly Petrov, who has proven himself this year in GP2, claims to have turned down requests from F1 contacts.
Petrov made headlines this season by securing his first GP2 victory in Spain, and he said he doesn’t want to play the role of a stopgap in F1 unless he can be competitive.
« I could drive in F1 from today or at least as a test driver, » declared the 23-year-old Russian.
But I am a perfectionist by nature, I do not want to drive for teams such as Spyker, Toro Rosso or Super Aguri.
« I’m not in a hurry and I don’t think it’s a good idea to sign a contract like that with an outsider. If the team doesn’t show real results, there will be no interest for either the team or the driver, » he added.
Petrov, who finished 13th at the end of the GP2 regular season, also claims that he is not at risk of buying his way into F1.
« There are two ways to become an F1 driver: through money or by invitation from a team, » he said.
« We have no budget problems, it is clear that this perspective is more attractive. But for money, I could not drive for a team that faces heavy difficulties, » Petrov concluded.
