Mika Hakkinen announced this Saturday morning that he intends to stop competing and retire.
The Finn has just completed his third season in DTM, where he took refuge after leaving Formula 1 in 2003.
World champion driver with McLaren-Mercedes in F1 in 1998 and 1999, he has won three victories in the German Touring Car Championship during his 3 years of competition.
« The time has come for me to stop racing and the DTM, » confirmed Hakkinen at the event organized by Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart.
« That’s the bad news. The good news is that the other drivers will now be able to have peace during the race… » He regretted.
Just like Schumacher for Ferrari, the 39-year-old Finn added that he would remain in contact with Mercedes in one way or another next year.
« This has been a great period of my life with the DTM. I will continue to do great things with Mercedes and we will make an announcement very soon. » Concluded the Finn.
