The McLaren team seems more than happy to see 2007 come to an end and to welcome a new season that it hopes will be nothing like the previous one.
In 2007, the team was fined 100 million dollars and excluded from the constructors’ championship after being found in possession of technical data belonging to Ferrari.
They were then warned that another investigation would be conducted in 2008 on their own cars to ensure that they did not contain anything that could have belonged to Ferrari’s intellectual property.
But this investigation was canceled when McLaren issued a public apology for its role in this espionage case and offered to freeze any development of the car that could have been determined by information from the Scuderia.
Lewis Hamilton, one of the two drivers involved in 2008 with the British team, insists that a page is turning along with the espionage affair. Everyone is now focused on the conquest of the world title.
« Life off the track was a disaster in 2007, but that’s the business world, there’s nothing you can do about it, » said Hamilton, who will be present at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart on Monday for the launch of the McLaren MP4-23.
I hope to never relive this situation and that the next season will be just as exciting but without these stories that make tabloid headlines. For me, it’s great, I’m almost considered the team leader and I hope I can handle the work that comes with this status.
