Alexander Wurz is on the verge of making a surprise return to F1, having signed a deal to become a test and reserve driver at Honda.
The Austrian, who retired as a racing driver last year after the Chinese Grand Prix, will provide support to Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello throughout the 2008 season. He will have to attend all the races next season.
Speaking about his new role, Wurz said: « I am delighted to join Honda Racing F1 Team at the start of what I hope can be a positive period for the team. Honda has a rich history of success in motorsport, and it is a real honor to be part of a team that places racing at the heart of its operations. »
« This is an excellent opportunity to play an important role in the development of the team moving forward. My previous three teams have all been winners of the world championships and I hope to be able to contribute to Honda’s ambitions. »
« I am fortunate to work with one of the best minds in F1 in the person of Ross Brawn. I am also eager to work with Jenson and Rubens, two drivers whom I know very well, and I am sure we will form a close-knit team over the coming weeks, » he stated.
Wurz will test the RA107 in Valencia, Spain, on January 22, while Button and Barrichello will be driving the new RA108.
The team principal Ross Brawn stated: « We are pleased to welcome Alex to the Honda Racing F1 Team and very happy to have secured one of the most experienced drivers. »
« Alex has 11 years of high-level experience in this sport, and this along with the breadth of knowledge will prove invaluable to us. »
« Alex will take his first test with Honda to get familiar with our team and the RA107 before playing a crucial role in the development of the new RA108. We are looking forward to working with him over the coming months, » concluded Brawn.
