Force India, through its co-owner Vijay Mallya, confirmed that Giancarlo Fisichella will be a race driver in this year 2008.
The official announcement will be made in India later today, Mallya said in the columns of the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. Fisichella will, therefore, join Adrian Sutil as a Grand Prix driver while Vitantonio Liuzzi will be a test driver.
« In the tests in Barcelona and Jerez, we used many drivers, and then we opted for Fisichella and Liuzzi, » said Mr. Mallya.
« Giancarlo, in particular, needs no introduction. »
When asked if Fisichella would be the team’s number one, Mallya stated: « Absolutely. He has much more experience and will help Sutil improve. »
Despite the formalization of contracts with Fisichella and Liuzzi, Mallya said that his ambition for 2008 is not too high to avoid disappointment.
I invested a lot of money to improve the car, but I have to be realistic. I can’t make any predictions. The goal is obviously to improve on what was done by Spyker last year.
« We need to earn some points. And above all, we must avoid finishing last at the end of the season, » he concluded.
