Vitantonio Liuzzi stated that he fully understood Force India’s decision to choose Giancarlo Fisichella as a race driver for the 2008 season. However, the young Italian hopes to be back racing very soon.
Liuzzi was one of the many candidates for securing the second spot within the Indian team. The Silverstone-based team eventually opted for the more experienced driver in the person of Fisichella, ultimately paired with Adrian Sutil for 2008.
Liuzzi, who raced for Toro Rosso last season, will be Force India’s third driver, but the Italian believes he could return to a much more significant role in the fairly near future.
The former teammate of Vettel said he had signed a long-term agreement with Force India. He is looking to leverage this test driver role for the years to come.
« I fully understand the team’s decision, » said Liuzzi at Jerez.
« Giancarlo is a very experienced driver, whereas I am a young driver. »
We have committed to the team for the long term, so I’m really happy with my position. I can’t hide that I would have preferred to be a race driver, but I understand the team’s decision.
« But this year, I must try to give maximum support to the team and do everything possible to seek improvement. I may be back in a race seat soon and I hope to benefit from this experience, » he continued.
« I think I am meant to be a racing driver, and I want to give my all for the team. It won’t be easy to watch the races on television, but we have a very busy testing schedule. »
Force India does not currently plan to use Liuzzi as a Friday driver for Free Practice 1 and 2.
« For the moment, we haven’t planned anything about this. We have just designed the new car. We have planned the work until February and we’ll see what happens next. »
