After giving his predictions last week, Jean Alesi reflected on the strange Formula 1 season in 2007…
The former French driver has indeed expressed his hope to see Jenson Button at the forefront with Honda and admits he doesn’t question their catastrophic 2007 season with the RA107.
« In F1, zero is a hero and vice versa, » he commented. « In the space of just two or three races, you can be seen as the new megastar or, conversely, be declared worthless just because the car wasn’t competitive. »
And yet, I am truly convinced that Button has the makings of a world champion. He has the speed and now the experience. Especially after the horrible season he had in 2007.
Jean Alesi sees the arrival of Ross Brawn in the team as the best thing that could happen to them. His arrival will allow them to make good choices and be much better this season. They certainly won’t win the title in the coming years, but there will be a lot of progress.
The former Ferrari, Benetton-Renault, Sauber, and Prost GP driver also spoke about the espionage scandals. He believes that F1 will be able to put this part of 2007 behind and even thinks that the image of the sport has not been affected.
The F1 for me remains the best championship that exists in the world. Just looking at last season, we had 4 drivers fighting elbow to elbow for four Grand Prix, ending with a superb victory for Räikkönen.
Certainly, the image of F1 has been disrupted with the espionage affairs, but now it’s over and I think it will be a good deterrent for the other teams on the grid, the Frenchman concluded.
