The 5th round of the A1 GP season started this Friday in New Zealand. At the Taupo Circuit, it was A1 Team Canada and Robert Wickens who recorded the fastest time in the first free practice session, reserved only for Rookies.

The drivers with less than 10 weekends of A1 experience were on the track for this morning session. 19 drivers, two of whom completed only one lap, the Czech Republic and India due to going off-track.

The top 10 is within less than a second while the top 5 are separated by only 5 tenths. Just one-tenth from Canada, we find the young Australian John Martin. He is followed by two still inexperienced full-time drivers, Adam Carroll for Ireland and Christian Vietoris for Germany.

Brendon Hartley, who was taking the wheel of an A1 for the first time, perfectly ranked in the top 5. The New Zealander at home was offered this position during the week by the national team, as they could no longer run their regular driver, Johnny Reid.

Also worth noting, France, which is racing this weekend with Loic Duval, did not participate in this first session reserved for rookies.
