Karun Chandhok believes he can reach the top tier of motorsport in 2009, primarily with the Force India team, if he excels this year in the GP2 championship.
The Indian has been linked with the team based in Silverstone since it was taken over by Vijay Mallya, a friend of Chandhok, at the end of last year.
And even though there is no possibility for the Indian to race in F1 this year, he thinks, on the contrary, that he has a very good chance of driving a single-seater in a race in 2009.
« If you look a little closer, Giancarlo Fisichella is at the end of his career and Adrian Sutil has been extended for only one year, » said Chandhok this week to Autosport magazine.
« It is perfectly possible to hypothesize that these two seats could be available by the end of the year. If I can finish in the top five in GP2, I think it could prove beneficial for my F1 driving career. »
Mallya proved by not taking either Narain Karthikeyan or me that he did not want to favor drivers sharing the same nationality as him and his team. Of course, the fact that I am Indian will help, and the ideal scenario is to have an Indian driver in this team, he added.
We are friends and we decided that another year in GP2 could only do me good and at the end of this season we will see.
Chandhok, who tested for Red Bull Racing last year, has signed with iSport in GP2 for the 2008 season. He will also participate in the GP2 series in Asia.
