BMW motorsport boss Mario Theissen is convinced that his team has the potential to compete alongside Ferrari and McLaren.
BMW Sauber was considered the third force last season but was able to finish second in the constructors’ standings following McLaren-Mercedes’ disqualification from the championship.
During the launch of their new car, BMW said they could hope for their first race victory this year before stepping up a gear in 2009 with the aim of winning the championship. Theissen is convinced that the team has the possibility to do so.
However, he is under no illusion about the difficulty of the task.
« We are convinced that the F1.08 from BMW Sauber represents another significant step towards progress, » said Theissen on the German team’s website.
« We are aware that achieving this goal will be anything but easy. The two teams that await us are not only the most competitive on the grid, but also have far more experience than anyone else. »
« Therefore, we must expect that they have also made progress with their new cars, » he added.
« We are very confident about our future achievements to close the gap between us and the Ferrari-McLaren duo and thus form a trio.
