The BMW Sauber team duo, Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica, believe that there are still many possible improvements to be made to their new F1.08. This is despite the progress made regarding the balance of the rather unstable cars at the beginning of the season.
Indeed, the drivers complained after the initial tests about the car’s balance but have since softened their criticism as in Barcelona, the F1.08 appeared to be in better shape.
« We have learned a bit more about the car and it seems to be a bit more competitive, but it is still not as good and as consistent as I would like it to be, » said Heidfeld.
« And in general, we have not yet reached the level we hope to achieve. But today, we are in a good configuration. »
When asked if good tests in Jerez next week would be an indicator of good form for the team, Heidfeld stated: « The problem is what does ‘good form’ mean? We want to be fast. »
« It is too early to say how we are going to be because we do not know the car well enough. It seems the single-seater feels a bit better in Barcelona… »
Kubica is philosophical about the problems the team has faced, but insists that BMW will resolve them as well.
« I think we were a little disappointed with what we saw, but it’s better to see it now than later, » he said.
« Now, we see what we have to do, the direction to take, and the work required to improve. »
« I think that to this day, we are in a better situation than last year at the same point, in terms of performance compared to other teams. »
« And of course, our ambitions are much higher because after a good season like last year, the goals are necessarily higher. Therefore, we must work as hard as possible, especially now, to improve. And in Melbourne, I hope we will be on a good pace, » added Kubica.
« I am sure that the new car has great potential, now we just have to work as hard as possible. I am convinced that we will be ready for the big day. »
Kubica stated that the new car was clearly an improvement over the F1.07 in terms of braking stability.
« I think that, last year, we made significant mistakes because I think the car is much more consistent and better suited for braking without the electronic systems. I find it much more stable than last year, » he concluded.
