The F1 teams, drivers, and circuits will be invited to unite behind the new program that the FIA has just unveiled to combat racism in racing. It will be officially launched at the Spanish Grand Prix in April.
The Race Against Racism is a project led by the FIA director. Through this program, he aims to denounce racism which will not be tolerated in this sport.
This is part of the events that occurred during the Barcelona tests where Lewis Hamilton was targeted and inundated with racist insults.
All stakeholders in F1 and in motorsport in general, such as teams, circuits, and national sporting authorities, will be invited to participate in the new campaign. A second campaign, The Mobilization Against Racism, should be launched quickly.
Fans will also be able to support this initiative through a website that will be set up before the official launch of the Race Against Racism.
« The FIA is appalled by the scenes of racially motivated violence experienced by Lewis Hamilton. Such behavior goes against the fundamental principles of equality enshrined in the FIA statutes, » stated a spokesperson for the FIA.
« Formula 1 is world-renowned and this sport has never encountered such scenes before and will not tolerate them in the future. »
« We will encourage all those involved in motorsports to support our new campaign as recent world champions for the next generations of drivers. »
The FIA has opted for a firm policy after the events at the Catalunya circuit by threatening to remove Spain from the official calendar. The European Grand Prix and the Spanish Grand Prix may disappear if measures are not implemented to ensure that this situation does not repeat itself.
