Williams still needs to make significant adjustments to its new FW30 if it hopes to challenge McLaren and Ferrari in races, despite very convincing pre-season tests.

In any case, this is the opinion of the technical director of the team, Sam Michael, who said this week in Autosport magazine that he believes his team has still not reached the level they wanted to see with their new car.

« We have very good references, but we are not fast enough to win Grand Prix, which is our goal, » said Michael.

« We are still quite far from McLaren or Ferrari. Many challenges will need to be overcome to hope to compete with them. »

« But the car has improved since last year, and we finished the season with more than encouraging races. If we can continue moving forward in this direction, it would be good because it’s the most important thing to do at the moment. »

Although Williams seems to have taken a step forward in terms of performance compared to other midfield teams, Michael believes that it is still too early to say how the team will perform compared to its competitors.

« It is always difficult to see the problems of other teams because they are not always visible from the outside. You might think they have major problems, but so much is happening behind the scenes! »

« For example, I don’t think BMW had much difficulty with their lap times on the last day of testing in Valencia and during the tests in Barcelona, » he stated.

« She is in competition like every team, BMW-Sauber is not at the level of McLaren and Ferrari but it is certainly first of the group just behind them. »
