The FIA is considering launching an ‘anti-racism’ campaign in the motorsport world later this year. This initiative has been applauded by a number of F1 teams.
« The race against racism », will be officially launched at the Spanish Grand Prix to show that racism will not be tolerated in the world of motorsports. Teams, drivers, and circuits are all invited to support this project.
The idea received immediate support from McLaren as their driver Lewis Hamilton was subjected to racist insults during the Spanish trials. Other teams have since followed this momentum.
Toyota President John Howett said on this subject: « Panasonic Toyota Racing supports all efforts to combat racism, and we fully support the position adopted by the FIA. »
Christian Horner for Red Bull Racing added: « We applaud the FIA’s efforts in this area. Racism has no role to play in any sport, let alone in motor racing. »
Daniel Audetto from Super-Aguri stated that his team was certain to become a committed supporter of this project.
« Super-Aguri F1 Team will, of course, support the FIA with its ‘Race Against Racism’ campaign, » he explained.
« Formula 1, for several decades, has been a sport where races are described as harmonious worldwide. We will support this initiative 100%. »
It seems that all the teams present in 2008 are aligning with the FIA. But will this anti-racism movement be enough to banish racial slurs from the circuits?
A Ferrari spokesperson made it clear that the Scuderia was fully aligned with the FIA on this matter. He said: « Ferrari stands in solidarity with all initiatives that can reduce any form of discrimination. »
