The reigning world champion Kimi Räikkönen says he is more than ever delighted to be a Formula 1 race driver for now, but has warned his fans that he will quit the sport as soon as it stops being fun for him.

The Finn claims that his title with Ferrari has only further enhanced his enjoyment of driving a Formula 1 car.

But, even after several victories and titles under his belt, Räikkönen claims that the determining factor for staying in F1 will be based on personal satisfaction rather than performance.

« I don’t want to become the oldest F1 driver, I will end my career well before that, » said Räikkönen in an interview for Italian television.

I want to achieve good results and win as many races and championships as possible. I don’t feel superior to other drivers to break the longevity record or other records.

« What I am experiencing currently is a fabulous experience that I am savoring. The day I stop, I will appreciate it as well, » he said.

Räikkönen said he was happy that Ferrari was his team and hoped it would happen during his F1 career.

When I was little, I watched the Grand Prix. Everyone dreamed of becoming a race car driver, while I only started thinking about it when I was 18 or 19 years old. It was only at that age that I seriously started to consider this career.

« Before that time, I was constantly changing my mind, dreaming of becoming this or that guy, in other sports as well. »

Now, Formula 1 is my job and it’s also what I love to do. I enjoy it more than ever because I have won the title. I love racing and driving in races, explained the Finn.

Regarding his years with McLaren, Räikkönen replied: «Sometimes, luck wasn’t on my side, but there were also many other reasons that explain the absence of a world title. »

« A few years ago, things could have turned out differently, but I won last year! When you lose, you always learn something. It’s not the most pleasant way to learn, but from a certain point of view, it contributes to it. »

« Now, I am happy and I don’t think I’m very lucky. If you work hard, you can get what you want, » he concluded.
