Testing – Day 2 – Honda ahead of Force India!

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain. The Honda driver tested some improvements and once again the 2009 version of slick tires. He was ahead of an impressive Force India, driven by Fisichella, by more than 7 tenths.

The first two set their best time with a 2008 aerodynamic configuration and slick tires, currently being tested by Bridgestone for the 2009 season. Therefore, they logically lead the standings.

Honda had also made some modifications, particularly to its front wing with components nicknamed angel wings for their shape, as well as elephant ears.

Behind the two drivers on slicks, Felipe Massa takes third position with the first time of one minute and twenty seconds. Just like the day before when he was leading, the Brazilian sets the benchmark time for the so-called classic teams since he was only using grooved tires.

The Ferrari driver was one of the most enduring on track today. He completed more than 100 laps (113 to be exact), along with 4 other drivers. It was Alonso who was the most active with 118 laps, at home.

The Renault driver tested a new wing on his rear hood, just like Red Bull’s. More improvements are expected this week. The front wing was added yesterday, the rear hood today, and probably the rear wing tomorrow.

On the Red Bull side, precisely, David Coulthard, who was participating, takes the 4th fastest time, just behind Massa. He is ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren by a few hundredths.

Nine drivers tested today despite the presence of 10 teams. Indeed, Super Aguri was missing, while Toro Rosso, which plans to launch its STR03 tomorrow, was present to get accustomed to the track.

The seven-time F1 world champion, Michael Schumacher, will also be present tomorrow with Ferrari. He will replace Massa.

Alonso was responsible for the only red flag of the day after an engine failure. The RS28 units are not yet at their best. The Spaniard did not test slick tires today, just like Heidfeld on BMW who concluded the session.

Between the two drivers, Rosberg (Williams) finishes the day in 7th position, ahead of Timo Glock in the Toyota TF108.
