Free Practice 3 – Lewis Hamilton once again leader

The young Briton Lewis Hamilton once again set the fastest time during the third practice session this Saturday morning. The McLaren driver, who is emerging as the favorite for victory on Sunday, is ahead of the Ferrari of Felipe Massa and the Toyota of Timo Glock – winner of the 2007 GP2 Series.

After 25 minutes of trials, Ron Dennis’s protégé dethroned Felipe Massa, who had taken the lead just seconds earlier. He was the first driver among the contenders for victory to set an honorable benchmark time.

The Brazilian then regained first place a quarter of an hour later, but Hamilton overtook him again with a time of 1’20”228 in the last five minutes of the session.

Behind Massa, Timo Glock delivers a strong performance to secure an impressive third place with Toyota. He had been in the leading pack for the entire session.

The second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen is in fourth position. The team also used the new experimental wings the day before during free practice 2.

Nelson Piquet’s Renault and Nick Heidfeld’s BMW-Sauber finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while both Toro Rossos were also competitive. Indeed, Sébastien Bourdais and Sebastian Vettel are seventh and eighth ahead of Kimi Räikkönen. The latter found himself in traffic on his last timed lap. Nico Rosberg’s Williams rounds out this top 10.

The session witnessed few incidents, with brief off-track excursions like that of Fernando Alonso (Renault), who is only 11th, or that of Robert Kubica (BMW).
