Nelson Piquet renewed his attack on his former boss Flavio Briatore from Renault by claiming the Italian’s ignorance about Formula 1. Having already labeled Briatore as his tormentor in a statement released after his dismissal, Piquet Junior once again expressed his anger in an interview with Autosport.
« He is ignorant about Formula 1, » Piquet said. « Being inferior to me wasn’t enough for him. He doesn’t understand what’s happening with the team. If you listen to the radio when he’s on the wall, it’s a joke. He has no idea what’s happening during a race. Sometimes, he wonders if a driver has slick or wet tires when it’s obvious. »
« Everyone knows that his ego is bigger than anything else, and he displays it shamelessly. You can be a very good businessman, but managing an F1 team is another thing. When I started, he attended all the meetings and briefings, but outside of that, he made remarks that made no sense. »
The only good thing the team can be satisfied with is its good relationship with the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone. Other than that, he doesn’t know what’s going on. He’s a bit like my sister who knows nothing about the car. Pat Symonds is the guy who really understands what’s going on with the team, he continued.
Briatore refused to react to Piquet’s statements, who has no qualms about his words left in the magazine Autosport: « We are free to say what we think, and I don’t see why F1 drivers should be any different. It was important for everyone to know what happened and not to hide it. Many other drivers tend to do that because they’re afraid it will compromise their careers. »
