The Czech Republic wishes, in the future, to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix on an urban circuit in the capital, Prague. The project, initiated by Toni Charouz, aims to stage a DTM race on a 2.5-mile (approximately 4 kilometers) track as a precursor to a Formula 1 event.
« F1 is our ambition, » declared Charouz for Autosport. « If we put on a good show in DTM, then maybe we can have a Grand Prix, but for now, we have nothing official on paper. »
This development project, which will be located three miles (just under 5 kilometers) outside the center of Prague, has been designed by the great F1 circuit ‘guru’, Hermann Tilke. This track will include a permanent 1.3 mile (about 2 kilometers) section and a turn within a 15,000-seat stadium.
Charouz did not want to reveal to what extent negotiations had progressed with Bernie Ecclestone (head of FOM), but he is convinced that this track can be a success: « This circuit will be urban in a city with 1.5 million people. This type of track is the future of motorsport, » he explained.
Charouz, who has managed teams in A1GP for example and has promoted various international events in Brno (the official circuit in the Czech Republic), stated that the planning process for this circuit was 90% complete.
The potential developments should start next year with the first races taking place in 2012. A DTM spokesperson was optimistic that this event will soon become a reality: « Hans Werner Aufrecht (the boss) likes urban races, so of course we are interested in this project, but it’s just a proposal for now. »
