Timo Glock has been announced as the first driver for the Manor Grand Prix team next year for its debut season in Formula 1. The 27-year-old driver, who had also been linked to Renault for 2010, joins the British team after two seasons with Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer decided to withdraw from the sport for cost and communication strategy reasons.

« I had several options for 2010, some teams seem more established, » stated Glock. « Every driver has the same overall goal: To win the world championship one day. I certainly want that, but I also want to be part of the process of building a team and playing a key role in the development of the car. That’s why the Manor Grand Prix opportunity is so exciting for me. »

« I spent a lot of time with the technical director, Nick Wirth, the team director, John Booth, and other team members. What I liked most is that this team is led by true racing enthusiasts. The team is small and new, but it has big ambitions. Its car is very impressive, as is its development program. I am convinced that I can play a major role from a technical standpoint. This is a fantastic opportunity for me. I am very eager to test the new car. »

Wirth, who has already been involved with an F1 team (Simtek between 1994 and 1995), stated that he was happy to welcome the 2007 GP2 champion: « It has always been my desire to have at least one driver with experience so that he can truly contribute to our development program. We don’t just want a driver who has achieved podiums in 2009, but a driver who has talent and will help us progress in the coming years. »

The fact that he came by making a decision speaks volumes about what we have achieved so far. Now, we are only waiting for one thing, which is to see Timo in the car for the first track tests scheduled for next year, added Wirth.

Glock finished 10th in the 2009 World Championship with Toyota after missing the last two races of the season (Brazil and Abu Dhabi) following a serious accident during the Japanese Grand Prix qualifying in which he injured his leg.
