The presence of a Canadian Grand Prix on the 2010 Formula 1 calendar is now official, after the government intervened to secure a five-year agreement to host a race. After months of uncertainty about the fate of the event, which was dropped this season, the return of the Montreal race was confirmed at a press conference in the Canadian city on Friday afternoon.

The agreement, which ensures the race’s spot on the calendar, was made possible thanks to the governments of Canada and Québec. Together, they have helped to establish an annual investment plan of £8.5 million (over €9.3 million) for the next five years.

In return for this money, Montreal and its partners will receive 30% of the profits from the ticket sales for the Grand Prix, which will take place on June 13, 2010. The mayor of Montreal, Gérald Tremblay, is delighted with this news, which will see the return of F1 to the North American continent. The sport did not come in 2009, which was a first in the history of the world championship.

“The return of Formula 1 to Montreal is a testament to our efforts and determination,” he explained. “This win-win agreement aligns with the terms we set and the taxpayer’s capacity. All this will create stability over the next five years.”

« I am very happy that our metropolis is getting back the Formula 1. It’s an exceptional opportunity to showcase our city on an international level. »

Local leaders insisted that their investments in the event make complete sense because of the significant financial boost the Grand Prix brings to Montreal. Quebec’s Finance Minister and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, Raymond Bachand, stated: “For Quebec, this event brings in more than 10 million dollars (6.6 million euros), for an investment of 4 million dollars (2.6 million euros).”

« The three levels of government have worked tirelessly together over the past few months to see the return of the Montreal Grand Prix while acting in a financially responsible manner. Thanks to this agreement, I am delighted that our efforts have been rewarded. »
