Richard Branson is not in a hurry to officially confirm the contract with the GP Manor team, despite rumors earlier in the week about an imminent announcement. There is currently no concrete plan for a press conference on the matter.
The involvement of Virgin within Manor has been a false rumor for some time, and was almost confirmed by an announcement from the FIA. Indeed, the governing body published the list of 2010 teams on Monday evening. Rather than naming the team as GP Manor, as was initially listed, the team was classified as ‘Virgin Racing’ with cars named ‘Virgin Cosworth’.
Beyond its total sponsorship and team name change, it is understood that Alex Tai, who oversees large-scale projects at Virgin, will have a crucial role within the Formula 1 team.
The company Virgin entered F1 this year with an agreement linking it to Brawn GP. Although there have been discussions about a possible contract extension to perhaps do the same as with GP Manor, nothing has been formalized. Thus, it will be, in a quasi-official way, GP Manor that will benefit from Virgin’s experience.
