The FIA has just announced that Sauber is allowed to be present on the 2010 Formula 1 grid, which puts an end to the uncertainties surrounding the team’s future. The Swiss-based team had been in limbo since the German car manufacturer BMW decided to withdraw from F1.

An initial agreement with Qadbak ultimately proved problematic, notably because it came too late for the team to be present on the 2010 grid. At that time, the 13th spot had then been given to Lotus. However, at the end of the season, Toyota also decided to withdraw from the sport, which logically allowed Sauber F1 another chance. Their hopes were further heightened when Peter Sauber took back command following the collapse of negotiations with Qadbak. Only the approval of the governing body remained.

With a secondary team from Toyota that has withdrawn its entry, the FIA confirmed Thursday that Sauber’s application to join the 2010 championship has been validated. This means that the team will compete in F1 next year.

« These are excellent news for the employees of Hinwil, » explains Sauber. After several weeks of uncertainty, we have finally secured our place on the grid for 2010. Now we can enter into a phase of concrete negotiations with drivers and sponsors. »

According to a statement released by the FIA: « The FIA has informed Sauber AG that its application for entry to the 2010 FIA Formula One Championship has been approved. Subject to the signing of the Concorde Agreements, Sauber will have the status of the 13th team in the championship, taking the place of the Toyota team. »

« The FIA worked closely with the commercial rights holder and the teams involved. »

In parallel, BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen is pleased with this year’s decision. He will remain with the team and stated that he was happy with the turn of events: “We are delighted that the FIA has granted our team the 13th place on the grid,” said the German. “This puts an end to a period of uncertainty for us.”

« The team can now focus all its attention on preparing for the next season. We have no doubt that Peter Sauber and his team will justify their candidacy through strong performances. We wish them much success in the future. »
