Andy Soucek is confident about his chances of being part of the Formula 1 grid in 2010. As a reminder, he shone during the Jerez tests in Spain earlier this month. The Spaniard spent a day with Williams, a reward for winning the Formula 2 championship this year.
The performance of finishing at the top of the timesheets on the first day of testing, combined with his successes in F2, leaves him with no doubt that now is the right time to make the big leap into Formula 1: « We don’t have a plan B at the moment, » Soucek had stated from Jerez. « We are really focused on being in Formula 1 next year, it’s our only goal. »
« I have to say that I am really very confident because I have a lot of help from Spanish sponsors. My manager and his team are doing a remarkable job in talks with different F1 teams. I am pretty sure that we can be on the grid next year. »
« Obviously, the new teams have rather tight budgets and I have sponsors who want to support me. Winning the F2 this year is what brought me to light, so I have to thank Jonathan Palmer and everyone there. I think it’s a good step before F1. »
Although Soucek’s nationality immediately directed him towards the Spanish team Campos Meta, he ruled out driving for them: « In fact, there wasn’t much interest. I know it’s a Spanish team and I am a Spanish driver, so it was logical. But they actually need more budget. »
He also made it clear that the focus was on a racing seat rather than a test driver role: « A racing seat is better! The number 3 driver covers few kilometers in the year under the rules. »
