Heidfeld remains convinced of his presence in F1

Nick Heidfeld admitted that Michael Schumacher’s comeback had an influence on his own Formula 1 chances this season. However, he remains optimistic and can secure a good option for his long-term future in the coming weeks. The German was the favorite to secure a seat at Mercedes GP if negotiations between the team and Schumacher had not ended successfully.

However, Schumacher’s return increases the uncertainty regarding Heidfeld’s future in the sport. Rumors today link him with either the second Renault seat or even a third driver role at Mercedes.

From his website, Heidfeld stated that Schumacher’s decision hit him, but he had no feelings of bitterness about the situation: « Of course, during the holidays, my professional situation didn’t change much because Michael Schumacher’s decision was published just before Christmas. It’s certainly a good thing for Formula 1 and I wish Michael and Mercedes good luck. »

« This decision affects me directly as it means there is one less seat for next year. I am not naive when I say, especially after the last few weeks, that many unexpected things can happen in Formula 1. »

Heidfeld added that he will continue to work hard to find an available seat and made it clear that the focus was on a team that would hire him for the long term: « We must now look to the future and focus on the best solution for my future in Formula 1. I will continue negotiations with the appropriate people. I hope that in the next few weeks, I will be able to announce something concrete about my future plans. »
