Robert Kubica visited the Renault F1 Team factory in Enstone last week in preparation for the 2010 Formula 1 season.
Defying the snow and cold that have hit Great Britain in recent days, Robert Kubica arrived on time for his meeting with his engineers in Enstone for the first fitting of the R30’s cockpit. With the start of the first winter tests approaching, it is necessary for the technicians and engineers to continue and quickly finalize the preparation work on the chassis.
During this workday, the young Polish driver also met with Eric Boullier, the Team Principal of the team. The two men discussed the preparations for this new season, and Robert Kubica shared his hopes and objectives.
Accompanied by his engineers, Robert Kubica also went to the wind tunnel to stay informed about the intensive development program. He then took the opportunity to get to know his team a bit better during lunch in the Enstone canteen.
Robert, what were your first impressions upon arriving at Enstone a few days ago?
I had already been to Enstone a few years ago when I did some testing with the team. The factory has changed quite a bit since then: it’s bigger and the CFD center opened in 2008. It plays an important role in the development of the new car. The atmosphere in the factory is very good, everyone is 100% focused on preparations for 2010 and ready to take on a new challenge. Just like me!
Did the cockpit fitting go well?
« We carried out a first fitting phase with a chassis model. We took the necessary measurements to ensure I’m comfortable in the car. We need to make a few minor adjustments, nothing major. I will return to Enstone at the end of the month to try the final chassis. It is also at that time that we will make the seat. Everything will be ready for the first tests in Valencia. »
How are your relations with the team?
« They are very good and the welcome I received at Enstone was very warm. This is just the beginning, and I still need to get to know everyone on the team, but things are going very well. I already have a good relationship with my engineers; we often talk on the phone because I want to stay updated on developments. I would say the only difficulty is having to wait so long for the start of the first tests. Winter is long and I can’t wait to be in Valencia! »
Robert Kubica will return to the factory towards the end of the month when he gets back from the Monte Carlo Rally, which he will compete in driving a Renault Clio R3.
