The US F1 team is about to announce Jose Maria Lopez as their first driver. The announcement will be made today at a press event in Argentina. Lopez, a former Renault test driver, revealed a few months ago that he had secured a seat with US F1 on the sole condition that he found the necessary funds. The young 26-year-old’s manager, Miguel Mattos, confirmed to Reuters that the deal is now finalized.

« Everything has been agreed upon, and the official announcement will be made on Monday, » Mattos announced to the news agency this weekend.

The Grand Prix winner, Carlos Reutemann, a close friend of US F1 director Peter Windsor and a leading political figure in Argentina, played a crucial role in funding Lopez. The new team will receive support from the Argentine government as well as other sponsors.

After leaving the Renault driver development program, Jose Maria Lopez raced in Formula 3000 and GP2 between 2004 and 2006. He claimed a victory at the Circuit de Catalunya in 2005.

He then returned to racing in Argentina and has just won the TC2000 series title as well as victories in the TopRace championship. He was also a finalist in the Turismo Carretera series. Lopez also participated in a handful of races in Europe in 2008 as part of the Ferrari ACA Argentina project in the FIA GT championship.
