The teams agree on a new points system

Formula 1 moved a step closer to overhauling its points system for the 2010 season after teams approved the new system that will offer larger rewards to winners.

Just a little over a month after the old 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system was replaced by the MotoGP format (25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1), some sources revealed that a meeting of the Sport Working Group in London approved last Friday a revision of the system that would favor the winner of a race.

Rather than a five-point difference between the first and the second, the teams agreed to widen this gap to seven points with some additional adjustments for the drivers at the bottom of the standings.

The newly approved points structure is: 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1.

This idea still needs to be approved by next month’s meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which could introduce it into the 2010 regulations. It will surely be a mere formality since the teams have already voted in favor of these changes.
