The Stefan Grand Prix team has shown that it remains determined to participate in the F1 championship as early as this season after sending equipment for the first race in Bahrain, despite the absence of an entry right. There is no longer any secret about its intentions to join the 2010 grid as the team has recently reached a provisional agreement with the former Toyota team for technical support. This would include the right to use the Japanese manufacturer’s car as well as the engine.
And although the team’s hopes of securing a late entry depend on the withdrawal of one of the new teams, Stefan GP wants to be ready just in case. In a statement released on Tuesday, the team announced it had sent equipment to Bahrain even if all the new teams confirm their presence for the season’s inaugural race.
« Stefan Grand Prix is the first team in F1 history to send a 40-foot container (about 13 meters) filled with equipment for the Bahrain race, without having an entry for the 2010 season. »
Stefan GP has already stated that if it does not get an entry, it intends to test throughout 2010 before securing a spot for 2011.
Furthermore, their first Formula 1 car will be on track by the end of the month in Portugal. The team has announced that they will test their car in Portimao from February 25 to 28. Stefan GP will unveil the S-01 a few hours before the test. Currently, rumors are increasing regarding the names of the two test drivers. The only one with enough experience and without a seat in 2010 is former Williams driver, Kazuki Nakajima. The other driver could be a real surprise as Ralf Schumacher’s name is being mentioned.
Stefan GP announced that its car was developed by the team with technical support from Toyota, with which they have established a technical partnership. The engine used will be the RG-01, also provided by Toyota. Finally, they released a photo of their offices, showing the team owner Zoran Stefanovich with former McLaren chief designer, Mike Coughlan.
