Jacques Villeneuve joins BBC Radio 5 Live and its team of commentators this weekend for the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 1997 Formula 1 world champion, disappointed recently by the failure of the Stefan GP project, has now set his sights on a commentator role, starting from the first race of the season. Stefanovich’s team has just suffered a bitter setback as, even in the absence of USF1 this season, the Serbian team was not allowed to enter the championship. Villeneuve and Nakajima were expected to be the official drivers, while Karun Chandhok would have taken on the role of test driver. The former is therefore becoming a commentator while the Japanese driver remains without a team and the Indian has found a place with Hispania.

The BBC radio team now consists of David Croft and former Honda driver Anthony Davidson. The latter also plans to race for Peugeot in the American Le Mans Series. The championship opens at Sebring next weekend and the Briton should start testing as early as Monday.
