Here is Renault back in the Grand Prix a few months later and the team has seen changes! Firstly, in terms of its drivers with the presence of Robert Kubica (ex-BMW) and Vitaly Petrov, one of the many rookies of this 2010 season. A change in its management team as well, as Renault is far from its Briatore/Symonds duo from last year.
Change also at the level of the single-seater with new sponsors like Lada or the strengthening of HP. The initial results are therefore rather favorable, with notably the 3rd place this morning for the Pole. The Russian was 8th in the afternoon…
Robert Kubica – 3rd and 15th:
« We drove in different conditions compared to the pre-season tests, with high air and track temperatures. It was the same for everyone, but it had an effect on tire performance. We therefore conducted two observation runs to study the degradation, then focused on the settings. During the first session, the new part of the track was dusty and slippery, but it improved shortly after. I think the track conditions will be better throughout the weekend. Overall, the day was good. »
Vitaly Petrov – 16th and 8th:
Being able to take the wheel of the car during a Grand Prix weekend for the first time was an intense feeling, but we had a well-planned technical program, so I got straight to work. We encountered a few small issues at the start of the day, but it’s race weekend, and we will work hard to progress as quickly as possible. Qualifying will be interesting.
Alan Permane – Chief Engineer
« Robert did everything we expected of him today, and Vitaly had a solid first day as a F1 driver. We ran both sessions with different fuel levels to prepare for both qualifying and the race. Both types of tires didn’t create any surprises, their behavior being similar to the tires used here last year. The super soft tires, in fact, provide excellent performance. Regarding the overall balance, the car is still suffering from a bit of understeer, and we need to overcome this by tomorrow. On the other hand, the rear end is very stable, and we have good braking efficiency. That’s exactly what’s needed on this track. It’s a good start to the weekend. »
