First major disappointment of the season for Peter Sauber, team director, and the two official drivers, Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi. After promising pre-season tests, both cars did not hold up on the track during the Bahrain Grand Prix. The situation is clear with two retirements due to hydraulic problems on both cars.
The team has two weeks to regroup and fix this issue before the next race, which will take place in Australia. The goal will be to showcase the potential of the cars, which in terms of performance were good this weekend in the Middle East.
Pedro de la Rosa – Retirement:
« I did indeed get a good start, but I lost positions when I avoided a collision with other cars. On the grass, I lost acceleration and a few cars managed to pass. By the time I reached turn four, I had lost several positions. Then I felt that we had a car that could fight for points, but there was no longer any chance of achieving that when I was called into the pits on lap 29 due to a hydraulic problem. »
Kamui Kobayashi – Retirement:
« Unfortunately, it was a short race for me because on the 12th lap, I lost the power steering of my car and from there I wasn’t able to do much more. The origin is a hydraulic problem. I had quite a good start by gaining four places, but then I had difficulties with my tires. I also believe it would have been better to start on the softest compound. Pedro was faster with this compound. »
Peter Sauber – Team Director:
« I obviously felt different things about how I wanted to return to Formula 1 as a team director, especially after our promising winter tests. But even before the race, our grid positions were disappointing. The race itself was decent from a performance standpoint, with both drivers fighting for positions before they both stopped due to hydraulic issues. We need to analyze this and solve this problem very quickly.
