AkzoNobel uses McLaren to develop its commercial products

The color of the single-seaters is often the easiest way to identify which team a car belongs to on the track. However, the painting process on the single-seaters is very complex since weight must be minimized as much as possible to avoid impacting performance on the track. Thus, AkzoNobel uses its partnership with McLaren to offer new products to its clients.

The color of the racing cars is often the easiest way to identify which team a car belongs to on the track. However, the painting process for racing cars is very complex because the weight must be minimized to avoid hindering performance on the track. Thus, AkzoNobel uses its partnership with McLaren to offer new products to its customers.

The two partners have already experienced the taste of victory together, as Lewis Hamilton won the world title the year the agreement between the two companies was implemented.

However, this could only be achieved by establishing new production procedures and manufacturing ultra-lightweight varnishes and paints suitable for Formula 1 cars. This expertise gained in the field of competition is directly reflected in the catalog offered by the Dutch company to its commercial clients, as explained by its CEO, Hans Wijers: “Our innovation capabilities align well with McLaren’s high-performance requirements. The shared knowledge we’ve acquired through this partnership has already allowed us to translate 80% of the custom solutions developed for McLaren Racing into commercial offerings for AkzoNobel’s clients.”

Today, the two companies have signed a new agreement that will extend the duration of their partnership for at least four more years. As such, the supplier’s logo will appear on the rear wings of the single-seaters of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. With a new agreement in place, we look forward to building on the groundbreaking work that our two companies are undertaking to develop the next generation of high-quality paints and varnishes.

The team’s statement does not indicate, however, whether the MP4-12C, the new supercar marketed by McLaren, will benefit from the technologies developed by AkzoNobel.
