Less than five weeks from the start of the world championship, Lotus Renault GP finds itself without its number 1 driver as Robert Kubica fell victim to a terrible accident while participating in a rally. The team will therefore have to find a solution very quickly since the Pole will be away from the circuits for many months.

The duration of this absence is crucial in choosing his replacement. Indeed, if the Pole were to miss only a few races, a temporary solution could be found internally. The team has two reserve drivers, Romain Grosjean and Bruno Senna, who are precisely there for this kind of situation.

But this scenario seems quite optimistic when we read about the extent of the physical damage the native of Krakow has suffered: a seven-hour surgery was necessary to address his right-hand fracture. Fortunately, it went well, but the doctors must wait another week to ensure no post-operative complications occur. Additionally, there are fractures in the shoulder and right elbow. Another surgery might then be necessary but not immediately, in order not to subject the driver to excessive stress.

It is therefore possible that the number 1 driver of the team will be out of commission for several long months, or even for the entire season. His career may have ended with this extremely violent accident. The team’s leaders therefore need to find a solution that allows them to make the most of the good first impressions left by the R31 during last week’s tests.

The former Renault F1 Team could then choose the same solution as in 2003 when they called upon Jacques Villeneuve to replace Jarno Trulli instead of giving their official third driver, Franck Montagny, a chance. If this solution is favored, one option stands out: Nico Hülkenberg, who has to settle for a third driver position at Force India this season. While the German driver has a long-term commitment with the Indian team, they might still grant a one-year loan to Lotus Renault GP. Indeed, this would allow him to gain experience before being given a race seat with the team starting in 2012. The learning experience would be much more significant than limiting him to Friday morning runs during races.

Another possibility could be to call on Nick Heidfeld, who has solid Grand Prix experience and has also had the opportunity to actively participate in the development of Pirelli tires, which might be appealing to the team’s engineers.

In the meantime, we wish Robert Kubica the best possible recovery, hoping that he will be able to once again compete behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
