The F2 drivers were practicing this week in Barcelona
After four weekends of racing outside Europe, Formula 2 returns to familiar ground at the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit for mid-season testing.
The Formula 2 drivers are completing laps on the Barcelona circuit for the mid-season testing in Barcelona, Spain. The teams have embarked on a 3-day testing session to optimize their cars, make improvements to their single-seaters, and above all, prepare well for the remaining 10 Grand Prix races. The next stage of the season will be at Imola next weekend, alongside the F1 cars.
During this morning’s first session, it was indeed Kush Maini, the Campos Racing driver, who set the fastest time in 1:24.943, ahead of Daruvala and Boschung.
The trials are similar to those in F1, with 2 sessions per day, one in the morning from 9 am to 12 pm and the other from 2 pm to 5 pm.
Small change from last year, the third sector has been completely modified on the Barcelona circuit. The drivers bid farewell to the chicane, making overtaking on the straight complicated. This year, before the starting line, there are two fast right turns, which are turns 13 and 14. As for the F1 cars, we will have to wait until June 4th to see them race on this new layout.
A brief update on the championship
This F2 season is exciting and the championship leaders change every weekend. It proves that a lot can happen. Theo Pourchaire has finished outside the points 4 times, but that doesn’t stop him from being the leader in his third year. His closest pursuer, Frederik Vesti, is not far behind as he is only 3 points behind the Frenchman. Japanese driver Ayumu Iwasa, on the other hand, struggled during the weekend in Baku. He arrived in Azerbaijan as the leader, but during the weekend he didn’t score any points and dropped to 3rd place in the standings.
Regarding the French racers, the two drivers who were competing for the F3 title last year are having a difficult start to the season. Victor Martins and Isack Hadjar are currently in 15th and 14th place respectively, having scored points in only half of the races.
One thing is certain, the Barcelona tests will be like a reset before the 10 weekends that await the young Formula 2 drivers aspiring to land in the pinnacle category of motor sport.
